WHAT I DO
My job is absolutely amazing, but unfortunately, not everyone is aware of what I actually do. Therefore, I would like to explain the various stages of my work:
Dialogue Editor
This individual is in charge of ensuring that all the sound recorded during production is cleaned up and edited for the final mix, resulting in clear dialogue for the film. The Dialogue editor also handles any lines that may need to be re-recorded (ADR) and organizes the Walla sessions.
ADR & Walla Recordist
The ADR and Walla Recordists have the important task of capturing the ADR (Automated Dialogue Recording) and Walla sessions for the Dialogue Editor. During an ADR session, actors re-record all the necessary lines of dialogue in post-production. On the other hand, a Walla session involves recording a group of people reacting in a specific manner to the scenes, providing more precise and controlled background sounds.
BG Editor
The main responsibility of the BG Editor is to create an editing session for the mix stage, where all the background sounds like wind, birds singing, rain, leaves rustling, traffic, and more are recreated.
SFX Editor
This editor’s job is to create a sound effect session for the final mix. By "sound effects," we refer to all the realistic sounds that appear in the movie, like cars, a barking dog, a gunshot, a striking sound, and more. These sounds play a crucial role in enhancing specific moments or actions in the film.
Foley Artist & Foley Recordist
Foley is the skill of creating live sounds that match the actions and movements of characters in a movie. These sounds may seem small, but they play a vital role in the overall audio mix, bringing the characters to life. Foley artists meticulously capture sounds such as footsteps, clothing rustles, hand interactions, and even special effects, adding depth and realism to the film.
Sound Designer
The role of a Sound Designer is to supply and produce unique sounds that may not exist naturally. These sounds can serve emotional purposes, such as drones, or be tailored for specific entities like creatures or monsters. The Sound Designer must possess a creative knack for manipulating and generating sounds in order to accomplish their objectives.
Re-Recording Mixer
This marks the last stage of audio post production, where the Re-Recording Mixer takes in the music and sounds provided by the editors. From this point onward, they collaborate with the directors and producers to bring to life the envisioned story. In order to achieve this, the Re-Recording Mixer skillfully blends and balances all the sounds throughout the entire film.
Music Editor
The Music Editor is responsible for taking the selected music from the Music Supervisor or the Composer and making necessary edits to ensure it perfectly aligns with the visuals. This ensures that the music enhances the storytelling by being placed in the most impactful moments.
Music Curation
This individual is in charge of choosing or finding the music and other important components for the film or creative project. They are responsible for obtaining, developing, storing, organising, directing, and overseeing the music needed for the project. Their role may also involve conducting special research and planning. Additionally, they may negotiate and authorise the purchase, sale, or contracts related to the music.
Boom Operator & Location Sound Mixer
This is the beginning of everything; the Boom Operator plays a vital role on set, working directly at the location. Their main task is to hold the boom pole, which carries the microphone, capturing all the performances. On the other hand, the Location Sound Mixer is responsible for recording and ensuring that all the sounds captured by the Boom Operator are of top-notch quality. These two roles are absolutely crucial for achieving high-quality production sound.
Every sound and detail created will ultimately contribute to telling the Director's envisioned Story, resulting in a film that truly captivates the audience.
